After Russia's massive attacks on energy infrastructure, Kyiv's power supply remains critical, with no forecasts for stabilization

The situation with electricity in Kyiv remains critical following massive Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, and there are currently no forecasts for stabilization, the Deputy Minister of Energy, Mykola Kolesnyk, reported at a briefing.

“We see that the enemy is practically deploying all available forces and means to destroy the energy sector. Kyiv is a particular target. Both generation and electricity transmission have been damaged,” Kolesnyk said.

He noted that each new attack significantly complicates and slows down the restoration of the energy system, and severe weather conditions further exacerbate the problem.

Kyiv is at highest risk
The most difficult situation is in the capital. Due to the massive attacks, emergency power outage schedules in Kyiv remain unstable and unpredictable.

“The situation regarding the duration of emergency outages, especially in Kyiv, remains unpredictable after the massive strikes,” emphasized the Deputy Minister.

No forecasts for restoration
The Ministry of Energy directly stated that it is currently impossible to give any forecasts regarding the stabilization of electricity supply.

“The situation is very difficult, and we cannot provide any forecasts at the moment because the enemy continues intensive attacks,” Kolesnyk stressed.

Emergency recovery work following the night attack on January 13 is being carried out not only in Kyiv. For example, over 6,000 consumers were left without power in Dnipropetrovsk region as of the morning. In Dnipro, the electricity distribution system was damaged, leading to additional network restrictions.

“Energy specialists are implementing all possible technical measures to return equipment to operational condition as soon as possible,” Kolesnyk said.

Statement from Ukrenergo
According to Ukrenergo, the elimination of several consecutive massive attacks on Kyiv’s energy infrastructure is ongoing. Despite difficult weather conditions, emergency restoration work is conducted around the clock.

“In Kyiv and several districts of Kyiv region, emergency outages are in effect. Hourly outage schedules are temporarily suspended. A return to predictable outage schedules will occur immediately after the situation in the energy system stabilizes,” the company said.

Consequences of the January 13 attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector
During the night, the Russian Federation carried out another massive missile and drone strike on energy infrastructure facilities in several regions of Ukraine.

Kyiv, Kharkiv, and other regions were the primary targets. As a result, consumers in the capital, as well as in Kyiv, Odesa, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Chernihiv, and Zaporizhzhia regions, were left without electricity.

In Kyiv, emergency power outages were introduced due to the destruction of energy facilities caused by the Russian attack. Additionally, in Hostomel and Irpin (Kyiv region), electricity supply will not be restored at least until January 15.
