All Ukrainian students who successfully complete Basic General Military Training (BGMT) and take the military oath automatically acquire reservist status, according to Ivan Tymochko, head of the Reservist Council of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, in an interview with Telegraf.
Reservist Selection Criteria
Tymochko explained that students receive reservist status immediately after taking the oath, regardless of age.
“They become reservists when they take the military oath. Age does not matter. After 25, these individuals may be called up if their social status, health, and other criteria meet selection requirements — then they become liable for military service. If not called immediately, they remain in the human reserve until needed or mobilized,” Tymochko said.
Completing BGMT Does Not Guarantee Priority for Call-Up
He also emphasized that completing BGMT does not give students automatic priority for conscription. Decisions on mobilization and the involvement of specific individuals are based on the army’s needs for specialists and the selection criteria established by military command.
About BGMT
Basic General Military Training (BGMT) programs are conducted under the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Education and are attended by applicants and university students. This training is distinct from general military training given to mobilized personnel at training centers or during specialized military courses.
