According to the European Commission, around 4.7 million Ukrainian refugees are currently living in the European Union, reports European Pravda.
EU Special Representative for Ukrainians Ylva Johansson announced the figures during a conference of the European Policy Centre in Brussels, focused on the planned end of temporary protection for Ukrainians in March 2027.
“There are about 4.7 million Ukrainians currently under temporary protection in EU member states — and this number continues to grow,” Johansson said, noting that new arrivals are registering for protection every week.
She stressed, however, that temporary protection “must remain temporary.”
“We are now entering a new phase — moving from temporary protection to partnership. I would say we are transitioning from refugee status toward forming a diaspora,” Johansson explained.
As European Pravda previously reported, on July 15, the EU Council officially extended the Temporary Protection Directive for Ukrainians until March 4, 2027. Once this protection period ends, Ukrainians will be assisted either in returning home or changing their legal status within the EU.
