Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is reportedly considering ending his professional boxing career following a deadly car accident in Nigeria.

This was revealed by the boxer’s uncle, Adedamola Joshua, in an interview with The PUNCH. According to him, Joshua shared his intentions with family members shortly after the tragedy. The accident, which occurred near Lagos last week, claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s close friends and team members — Sina Gami and Latif Ayodele.

The family, his uncle said, reacted with relief to the possibility of Joshua retiring. “His health and life are what matter most to us. Every fight has been a huge emotional strain,” Adedamola told The PUNCH.

He added that Joshua had previously expressed a desire to leave the sport while still at the top, without waiting for serious harm to his health. When asked directly whether this was a final decision, his uncle replied: “Yes, he told the family so.”

In addition, Joshua has committed to providing lifelong support to the families of his two friends who died in the crash.
