Romania national team head coach Mircea Lucescu, who recently set an age record in world football, has been hospitalized.
This was reported by the Romanian Football Federation.
The team was scheduled to travel to Bratislava in the evening for a friendly match against Slovakia, but Lucescu will not be part of the delegation. The 80-year-old coach felt unwell during a meeting before the final training session and departure. The national team’s medical staff immediately provided first aid on site.
Emergency services later arrived at the training base, and his condition was stabilized. He was then taken to a hospital in Bucharest for monitoring and a thorough examination of his heart function.
It is worth noting that in January, Lucescu was also hospitalized due to complications after a severe cold and heart-related issues. Under his leadership, Romania lost 0–1 to Turkey on 26 March in the semifinal playoff of the 2026 World Cup qualification.
Mircea Lucescu coached Dynamo Kyiv from 2020 to 2023, winning the Ukrainian Premier League title as well as the Ukrainian Cup and Super Cup. Before that, he managed Shakhtar Donetsk, where he won the UEFA Cup, eight Ukrainian league titles, seven Super Cups, and six Ukrainian Cups.
He is also known for his coaching roles at Inter Milan, Beşiktaş, Galatasaray, Zenit Saint Petersburg, the Turkey national team, and other clubs.
