Marta Kostyuk secured a place in the semifinals of the French Open after defeating fellow Ukrainian Elina Svitolina in a hard-fought quarterfinal on Tuesday.
Kostyuk won the all-Ukrainian showdown in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
The 23-year-old reached a Grand Slam quarterfinal for the first time and made history by becoming the first Ukrainian woman ever to advance to the singles semifinals at Roland Garros. Previously, only Andriy Medvedev had reached the semifinals of the French Open for Ukraine, doing so in the men's draw in 1993 and 1999.
In the semifinals, Kostyuk will face Mirra Andreeva, currently ranked No. 8 in the WTA rankings. Kostyuk holds a 2-0 head-to-head advantage over her upcoming opponent.
For the 31-year-old Svitolina, it was the sixth Roland Garros quarterfinal appearance of her career.
The match marked the third meeting between the two Ukrainians. Svitolina won their first encounter at the Australian Open in 2018, while Kostyuk claimed victory in their previous clash at the Toronto tournament in 2024.
The result represents the biggest Grand Slam breakthrough of Kostyuk's career and keeps Ukrainian hopes alive in the women's singles competition in Paris.
