Hungary is ready to allow and facilitate the transit of Ukrainian grain through its territory, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar said, according to Telex.
Magyar told journalists that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had asked Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary to allow grain shipments through their territories during a plenary session of the EU summit.
The Hungarian prime minister said he saw no obstacles to fulfilling the request.
Magyar recalled that a well-established transit procedure had operated several years ago but was later discontinued.
He also said Zelenskyy raised the issue during their one-on-one meeting, explaining that transporting corn by rail to Western Europe in sealed freight cars would be a significant help.
“If it is only transit through the country, then of course there are no obstacles,” Magyar said.
Zelenskyy and Magyar hold first official meeting
On October 16, 2026, Zelenskyy and Magyar held their first official meeting. The talks took place one-on-one, without either delegation present.
The leaders discussed Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, including the possibility of closing Chapters 4 and 5 by the end of 2026, as well as bilateral relations and the rights of national minorities.
Magyar also publicly thanked Ukraine’s parliament for formally recognizing crimes committed against ethnic Hungarians in Transcarpathia during deportations and forced labor in 1944 and 1946.
