A nuclear facility in the Iranian city of Natanz was reportedly hit during airstrikes carried out as part of a U.S.-Israeli military operation, Reuters reports.
“They again attacked peaceful, protected nuclear facilities in Iran yesterday,” said Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Reza Najafi. When asked by Reuters which sites were affected, he confirmed that Natanz was targeted.
What the IAEA says
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that, at present, there is no indication that any nuclear installations—including the Bushehr nuclear power plant, the Tehran Research Reactor, or other nuclear fuel cycle facilities—suffered damage during the airstrikes.
Iran restoring nuclear capacity
Earlier in February, satellite imagery showed that Iran had resumed work on nuclear sites previously damaged by U.S. and Israeli strikes. The images revealed new roofs being installed on two key facilities—Natanz and Isfahan—both of which had sustained significant destruction. This marked the first recorded activity at these sites since the end of hostilities in June and may indicate Iran is moving from assessing damage to taking practical steps to restore operations.
Middle East situation
On February 28, Israel and the United States conducted a series of strikes against Iran. According to former President Donald Trump, the U.S. launched the military campaign to eliminate threats posed by Iran’s current regime. Media reports indicate that Trump ordered the large-scale airstrikes on Iran following prolonged lobbying by Israel and Saudi Arabia. The strikes reportedly resulted in the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
