A suspect has been detained in Germany in connection with the murder of former Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine, Andriy Portnov. He was shot dead in Spain last year.

This was reported by Spanish police.

Details of the arrest

The special operation took place in the German city of Heinsberg.

According to Spanish law enforcement, the detainee is the direct perpetrator of the crime — the man who opened fire near the gates of an educational institution. The arrest involved officers from the 5th Homicide Investigation Group of the National Police Corps in Madrid, working jointly with a special operations unit of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA).

Portnov’s murder

Andriy Portnov was killed on May 21, 2025, in the Spanish municipality of Pozuelo de Alarcón.

The attack occurred at approximately 9:15 a.m., when the 51-year-old had brought his children to the American School of Madrid.

The gunman fired at least five shots as the former official was getting into his Mercedes. He died at the scene from his injuries.

Spanish investigators initially considered the possibility of a contract killing linked to the victim’s professional or political activities.
