Poland will expand its military presence in the Lublin Voivodeship, including Patriot air defense systems, Abrams tanks, drone units and elements of the newly formed 18th Motorized Brigade, Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said.
The first Patriot batteries have been deployed in the Lublin region, marking the first time the systems have been stationed there, according to Poland’s Ministry of National Defence. The ministry said the deployment is intended to strengthen the security of the region.
Part of the 18th Motorized Brigade will be based in Biłgoraj, where Poland also plans to develop air-defense capabilities and form a motorized battalion.
Drone forces will be expanded in the northern part of the voivodeship, including in Łuków. Kosiniak-Kamysz said the long-term plan could include establishing a brigade-level unmanned systems formation there.
Additional military infrastructure is also planned elsewhere in the region. Facilities in Sobieszyn will be expanded, while helicopters for the land forces will be based at Lublin Airport. The government also plans further infrastructure for Abrams tanks near Kraśnik.
The 18th Motorized Brigade is already being formed using infrastructure belonging to the 19th Mechanized Brigade, which is based in Lublin.
The Lublin Voivodeship already hosts the 19th Mechanized Brigade equipped with M1A1 Abrams tanks, the 2nd Reconnaissance Regiment, the 18th Anti-Aircraft Regiment and the 2nd Territorial Defence Brigade.
Warsaw has said the measures are aimed at strengthening the defense of Poland’s eastern regions amid growing security concerns along the country’s borders. The Polish Defense Ministry said the new deployments were agreed with military commanders and are intended to increase the sense of security in the region.
