The White House is pushing to finalize an agreement to end the war in Ukraine before the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence on July 4, according to Bloomberg.
Sources among Washington’s allies say the U.S. wants the deal concluded before President Donald Trump celebrates the milestone. However, senior European officials and NATO representatives see no sign that Vladimir Putin is willing to accept an agreement that does not meet his core demands. U.S. officials acknowledge privately that Putin shows no readiness to compromise on his maximalist positions.
Trump envisions signing a deal on security guarantees and ending the war during a major ceremony, but Ukraine insists the agreement first be approved and ratified by the U.S. Congress. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says this is essential to give Ukrainians confidence in their allies for the future.
