U.S. Vice President JD Vance said the war in Ukraine is the most difficult international conflict for Washington to resolve, but expressed confidence that it will eventually be brought to an end. His remarks were reported by Clash Report on September 21.
Vance said the Trump administration expected progress from an upcoming meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York.
“I believe he will meet with President Zelenskyy either tomorrow or the day after. So I am sure there’s going to be some good progress made,” Vance said.
The vice president acknowledged the difficulty of resolving the conflict but said the White House intended to continue its diplomatic efforts.
“Do I think the Ukraine war is going to get solved eventually? Yes. It’s just a question of time,” Vance said.
His comments came ahead of the planned Trump-Zelenskyy meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Zelenskyy said after a phone call with Trump on September 20 that the two leaders had agreed to meet and that the talks could provide new momentum to diplomatic efforts.
The talks are expected to include possible de-escalation measures and security issues. Zelenskyy said Ukraine was prepared to discuss proposals with its partners, while stressing that Russia would also need to take corresponding steps, including halting strikes on Ukraine’s energy sector and critical infrastructure.
The negotiations come as fighting continues and as Washington seeks to restart a broader diplomatic process between Kyiv and Moscow.
Vance’s remarks also followed renewed discussion over Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries. Trump has repeatedly called on Zelenskyy to halt such attacks, while Zelenskyy said Ukraine was prepared to take reciprocal de-escalation measures if Russia stopped targeting Ukrainian energy and other critical infrastructure.
