In Moscow, a car explosion killed Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff, Russian investigators confirmed.
The blast occurred at around 6:50 a.m. in one of Moscow’s districts. According to investigators, the explosion happened after the vehicle began moving from a parking area. The Russian Investigative Committee said an explosive device had been planted under the car’s chassis.
“As a result of the injuries sustained, Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Operational Training Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, died,” the committee said in a statement.
A criminal case has been opened on charges of murder committed by a generally dangerous method. The Investigative Committee said one line of inquiry is examining a possible link to the activities of Ukrainian intelligence services, though Ukrainian authorities have not commented.
According to official information, Sarvarov took part in military operations in Ossetia, Chechnya and Syria, and was involved in Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
