About the An-22
The An-22 “Antey” is a Soviet turboprop transport aircraft developed in 1965 at the Antonov Aviation Scientific-Technical Complex in Kyiv. It set 41 world aviation records.
Serial production took place at the Tashkent Aviation Plant, with the first An-22s delivered to the USSR Air Force in January 1969. Production continued until January 1976, with a total of 66 aircraft built.
The An-22 can carry 29 personnel with cargo, 290 soldiers, or 206 wounded. Its cargo capacity is 60 tons.
For context, in July, an Antonov An-24 passenger plane crashed in Russia’s Amur region with 49 people on board. No passengers or crew survived, and the wreckage covered an area of half a kilometer.
