China’s Foreign Ministry has denied a report by the Financial Times claiming that Chinese leader Xi Jinping spoke critically about Vladimir Putin and the war in Ukraine during a meeting with Donald Trump.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun called the report “pure fabrication” and said the information “contradicts the facts.”

According to the earlier Financial Times report, Xi allegedly told Trump that Putin could eventually regret launching the war against Ukraine. The newspaper noted that Xi had not previously expressed such direct criticism of the Russian leader.

Putin is expected to arrive in China later today, shortly after Trump’s visit to the country. Russian media report that the Kremlin leader is traveling with a delegation of 39 people, and around 40 bilateral documents are expected to be signed during the visit.
