NATO has condemned Russia’s “irresponsible actions” after a Russian drone struck a residential building in Romania during Moscow’s overnight attack on Ukrainian infrastructure near the border.

In a statement posted on X on Friday, May 29, NATO spokesperson Allison Hart said Secretary General Mark Rutte is in contact with Romanian authorities following the incident.

“Early this morning, a drone struck a residential building in Romania during a Russian attack on Ukrainian infrastructure near the border,” Hart said.

“We condemn Russia’s irresponsible actions, and NATO will continue strengthening its defenses against all threats, including drones,” she added.

During the night, a Russian drone crashed into an apartment building in the Romanian border city of Galați, hitting one of the apartments and causing a fire. Two people were injured, while around 70 residents were evacuated.

Romania’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that the drone was Russian. Responding to questions about why it had not been intercepted, the ministry stated that Romania “cannot risk creating greater threats than it is trying to prevent.”

According to Romanian authorities, debris from drones has been found on Romanian territory 47 times since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Romania’s Foreign Ministry described the incident as a “serious and irresponsible escalation by Russia” and said the country would take “necessary diplomatic measures” in response to what it called a serious violation of international law and Romanian airspace.

Bucharest also informed NATO allies and the alliance’s secretary general about the incident and requested accelerated support for counter-drone capabilities.
