US President Donald Trump has reportedly asked Chinese leader Xi Jinping to help bring an end to the war in Ukraine.
According to South China Morning Post, citing sources familiar with the matter, Trump told Xi during a meeting in Beijing that negotiations between Russia and Ukraine had reached a deadlock. He reportedly urged China to use its influence to bring Russian President Vladimir Putin back to the negotiating table with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The report says the request reflects Washington’s growing interest in involving Beijing in efforts to end the conflict. Trump has made resolving the war one of the key priorities of his foreign policy agenda since returning to the White House in 2025.
The development comes amid renewed discussion about the prospects for ending the war. Last week, Zelensky reportedly told lawmakers from the Servant of the People faction that the war’s “hot phase” could end by November. Meanwhile, Presidential Office chief Kyrylo Budanov said ending hostilities before winter remains a realistic objective and that preparations are underway for important negotiations involving Western partners, while ruling out any territorial concessions by Ukraine.
