The Italian government has secretly approved a new military aid package for Ukraine that includes Aster 30 interceptors, SAMP/T NG air-defense systems and long-range radars, La Repubblica reports.
The decisions were reportedly approved by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government and are expected to be formally included in Italy’s 13th military assistance decree.
Four SAMP/T NG systems and seven radars
The core of the package will reportedly consist of air- and missile-defense capabilities, including four SAMP/T NG batteries capable of intercepting ballistic missiles, along with Aster 30 interceptor missiles.
Italy also plans to provide seven long-range radars — six manufactured by French company Thales and one by Italian defense contractor Leonardo.
The agreement reportedly follows a deal reached between Italy and France in July. The two countries jointly produce SAMP/T systems and Aster 30 missiles.
Ukraine currently operates two SAMP/T batteries supplied by Italy and France, which have demonstrated their effectiveness in combat. However, since mid-2025, shortages of Aster 30 missiles have become a problem as stocks in France and Italy have fallen significantly.
Aster 30 production could begin in Ukraine
France and Italy may also authorize Ukraine to manufacture Aster 30 N1BT interceptors domestically, potentially reducing Kyiv’s dependence on finished missiles supplied from Europe.
Italy is expected to transfer some missiles to Ukraine as early as October, both to replenish ammunition for existing SAMP/T systems and to support the new batteries.
The total value of the package is estimated at around €3 billion, with financing expected to come from the European Union through the Ukraine Support Loan program.
Italy has previously signaled its intention to strengthen military and security assistance to Ukraine. On August 24, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced preparations for another aid package following a conversation with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
