Paris will also assist in rebuilding Ukraine’s Armed Forces after the war.
French President Emmanuel Macron said that, following a ceasefire in the conflict in Ukraine, several thousand French troops could be deployed on Ukrainian territory (an idea previously rejected by Italy), according to Franceinfo. They would take part in operations monitoring the Russia–Ukraine border after the ceasefire.
“These forces will not engage in combat,” the French president emphasized.
Another postwar role for France will be supporting the reconstruction of Ukraine’s Defense Forces. Previously, following the “Coalition of the Willing” meeting on December 6, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and France signed a declaration on deploying peacekeepers on land, in the air, and at sea once the war concludes. The document states that the first line of deterrence against Russian aggression will remain the Ukrainian Armed Forces, whose numbers are projected at 800,000. The United States will be responsible for monitoring the situation.
