US President Donald Trump has agreed with G7 leaders that Russia has shown no genuine willingness to engage in meaningful peace negotiations, French President Emmanuel Macron said, according to a post from the Élysée Palace on X.
Macron noted that several months have passed since the United States took the initiative to open talks with Russia, praising Washington’s efforts to facilitate dialogue.
“The Americans said they would negotiate with Russia because they could. What happened? Nothing,” Macron said.
He added that Ukraine has repeatedly expressed readiness for full negotiations, including direct talks with Moscow. However, according to Macron, Russia has refused to engage constructively.
“What did Putin say? ‘No. I will not come. Or you must first surrender,’” Macron stated, describing the current deadlock.
The French president said that G7 leaders agreed Russia is not currently demonstrating serious interest in peace talks. He also emphasized that Ukraine has shown strong resistance and that support for Kyiv will continue to be strengthened.
