US President Donald Trump said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin need to hold direct talks, but suggested there is a key obstacle preventing it from happening.
Speaking at the G7 summit, Trump noted that he has spoken with both leaders — including phone conversations with Putin — and described the discussions as “very productive.”
“It seems that many soldiers are being lost on both sides. Russia is losing more because they are attacking. When you attack in a war, you lose more people,” Trump said.
He added that during a recent Sunday call with the Russian president, he shared his own assessments of the situation. Trump reiterated that dialogue between Kyiv and Moscow is necessary, but said the two sides “simply don’t know how to do it” or how to initiate direct переговори.
Earlier, Trump also indicated that after addressing the situation in the Middle East, the United States would shift greater focus to efforts aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, where he estimates tens of thousands of casualties occur each month.
