Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to arrive in the United States late on September 23 for a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington the following day, Politico reports, citing people familiar with Xi’s itinerary.

Xi is not expected to travel to New York for the UN General Assembly during the trip. Instead, his visit will reportedly focus on a meeting with Trump at the White House on September 24.

According to preliminary plans, Xi will leave the United States on September 25, meaning he will spend just one full day on official engagements in the country.

The White House confirmed that Xi will visit Washington on September 24 for talks with Trump but declined to comment on other details of his schedule.

Earlier, diplomats in Washington had suggested that Xi might combine his visit with an appearance at the UN General Assembly, which opens in New York on September 22. The absence of a Chinese advance delegation in New York may indicate that Beijing is not preparing for a visit by Xi to the UN headquarters.

Xi last personally attended the UN General Assembly in New York in 2015.

Trump invited Xi to the White House during a summit in May. At the time, the U.S. president described their talks as “fantastic,” while both sides agreed to continue dialogue despite major differences.
