President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa.
On Sunday, April 5, Zelenskyy arrived in Syria for an official visit, where he is expected to hold talks with head of state Ahmad al-Sharaa, according to Reuters citing two Syrian sources.
The agency notes that the negotiations are linked to defense issues amid the ongoing regional war, according to one government advisory source.
Zelenskyy later confirmed his visit to the Syrian capital personally.
“Today in Damascus. We continue our active Ukrainian diplomacy for real security and economic cooperation. Important meetings ahead — several meaningful formats have been prepared. Every nation and every region deserves a peaceful life,” he wrote, sharing a video showing him stepping off a Turkish government aircraft.
The two leaders previously met on September 24 during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, where they discussed bilateral relations, including agricultural projects. They also addressed security threats facing both countries and the importance of countering them. Zelenskyy and al-Sharaa agreed to develop relations between Ukraine and Syria based on mutual respect, trust, and dignity.
On April 4, Zelenskyy was on an official visit to Turkey, including Istanbul, where he met with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and also held a meeting with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
Reports suggest that Ukrainian Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan accompanied Zelenskyy to Damascus.
