Barcelona officially leaves the Super League, leaving only one club in the project
Catalan club Barcelona has announced its decision to withdraw from the Super League, the project that aimed to revolutionize European football.
The club confirmed its decision on its official website and informed the European Super League Company, the organization managing the project. As a result, Real Madrid remains the only formal participant.
At the end of 2023, the European Court ruled that FIFA and UEFA violated competition law and the freedom to provide services by blocking the creation of the Super League. Real Madrid and Barcelona had planned an alternative tournament, potentially featuring 64 clubs divided into three divisions.
The first attempt to challenge UEFA’s monopoly via the Super League failed in 2021. In 2023, national leagues, clubs, coaches, and players also publicly opposed the project.
UEFA has since reformed its European competitions starting from the 2024/25 season, eliminating group stages in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League. Teams now compete in single leagues up to the playoff stage.
