Svitolina defeats Russian opponent in third round of Australian Open 2026

Svitolina reaches round of 16 at Australian Open 2026

On the morning of January 23, Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina (WTA No. 12) competed in the third round of the 2026 Australian Open.

The top Ukrainian defeated “neutral” Russian-player Diana Schneider (WTA No. 22) with a score of 7–6, 6–3. The match lasted 1 hour and 35 minutes and marked the first career meeting between the two players.

In the next round, Svitolina will face the winner of the match between Romania’s Elena Gabriela Ruse and Russia’s Mirra Andreeva.

At 31 years old, this is Svitolina’s 13th appearance at the Australian Open. Her best results in Melbourne are reaching the quarterfinals in 2018, 2019, and 2025.
