Russian forces continued their attacks on Kyiv and the surrounding region on September 2, with fires reported in several districts of the capital and the number of injured continuing to rise.
Residential building hit in Shevchenkivskyi district
A Russian drone struck a six-story residential building in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district, causing a fire and partial structural collapse.
A separate fire also broke out in a nearby three-story building.
A medical facility in the district was also damaged, with several windows blown out. Preliminary reports indicated that no patients or medical staff were injured.
By midday, Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said seven people had been injured, five of whom were hospitalized.
University hit during classes
Russian forces also struck one of Kyiv’s universities while classes were underway, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
At the time of the attack, 160 students were in a shelter. No injuries were reported.
Another drone strike was later reported in Holosiivskyi district, where a warehouse building was hit.
Initial reports of explosions near Kyiv’s central railway station were not confirmed. Ukrzaliznytsia said there had been no strikes on railway infrastructure in central Kyiv.
Traffic restrictions in central Kyiv
Authorities temporarily restricted vehicle traffic on several streets because of the consequences of the attack.
Restrictions were introduced on:
- Tarasivska Street, from Saksahanskoho Street to the intersection with Hetmana Pavla Skoropadskoho Street;
- Mykilsko-Botanichna Street, from Pankivska Street to the intersection with Tarasivska Street.
The latest attack follows a major Russian missile and drone strike on Odesa overnight on September 2, which damaged a high-rise residential building and educational facilities and injured eight people, including a child.
A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he had ordered the Russian military to prepare mass strikes against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, describing them as retaliation for Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian oil refineries.
