Ukraine has identified a new Russian cruise missile called Filin, with a reported range of up to 1,200 kilometers, Ukrainian presidential adviser Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov said in a Telegram post.
The missile can reach speeds of up to 800 km/h and fly at altitudes of up to six kilometers. Its warhead is reportedly comparable in weight to that of one or two Shahed drones.
According to Beskrestnov, the missile’s main advantages are its speed and maneuverability. It can be launched from helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles without requiring specialized drone launch platforms. It is also manufactured using Russian-made components.
The weapon is produced by NPO Molniya, a company that previously manufactured guided aerial bombs. Its jet engine is Russian-made and is also used in the S71 and Banderoль systems.
Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Directorate (HUR) is systematically identifying Russian missiles and drones and analyzing their components to determine and disrupt supply channels for parts used by Russia’s defense industry.
Russia reportedly began using the Filin cruise missile against Ukraine in late summer. At the time, HUR disclosed key specifications, noting that Moscow was seeking to expand its use of low-cost weapons powered by domestically produced engines.
Ukrainian intelligence is also investigating foreign-made components found in Russian weapons. It previously published a list of foreign parts used in Kometa anti-jamming navigation modules, which Russian forces widely install in missiles and drones.
