Continued support from European NATO members will be crucial for Ukraine’s ability to sustain its defense against Russia, according to US Deputy Defense Secretary Elbridge Colby.
Colby said Washington’s strategy of shifting greater responsibility for Ukraine’s support to Europe has proven effective. According to him, European allies have increasingly taken the lead by providing financial assistance and military aid to Kyiv.
“Over the past year, European allies have assumed a leading role in supporting Ukraine’s defense, taking responsibility for financial assistance and supplying their own weapons,” Colby said.
He argued that the transition has coincided with Ukraine maintaining an effective defense and, in some areas, improving its battlefield position.
“Ukraine has managed to hold the front line and even improve its position in certain areas, while continuing to lay the groundwork for a durable peace built on Russia understanding that continuing this war will not pay off,” he stated.
At the same time, Colby stressed that Ukraine’s defense remains dependent on steady and long-term backing from its partners.
“We repeatedly hear in the United States how vital Ukraine’s defense is for Europe and our allies, but our allies must back up their words with actions,” he said.
The remarks come as European governments continue discussions on increasing defense spending, expanding military production, and providing additional support to Ukraine amid the ongoing war.
