Starting in 2027, the UEFA Champions League could undergo major changes in both its format and broadcasting system.
According to Cope, the tournament will retain its name and feature 36 participating teams. However, instead of a single large group stage, the competition would be split into two subgroups: the top 18 clubs based on UEFA rankings and the remaining 18 teams. Each side would play eight matches — four at home and four away — only against opponents within their subgroup. The top eight teams from the first group would advance directly to the round of 16, while the qualification format for the other 16 spots in the round of 32 is still under discussion. Organizers believe this approach would guarantee more high-profile matches every week.
UEFA also plans to launch its own streaming platform — a kind of “Netflix for the Champions League.” This service would lower access costs for fans while increasing clubs’ revenues from broadcasting rights.
