The Moscow region came under a large-scale drone attack overnight on October 6, with monitoring channels reporting that the Moscow Oil Refinery in the Kapotnya district was among the possible targets.
Drones reportedly approached the Moscow region from several directions, with explosions continuing into the early morning.
The Moscow Oil Refinery, owned by Gazprom Neft, is one of Russia’s largest refineries and supplies a significant share of the fuel market in the capital. Disruptions to its operations could therefore affect fuel supplies in Moscow.
Another reported target was the Volodarskaya Linear Production and Dispatch Station near the settlement of Volodarsky and the village of Konstantinovo. A fire broke out at the facility following the reported strike.
Monitoring channels describe Volodarskaya as a major oil-products storage and dispatch facility through which trunk pipelines supplying the Moscow region pass. The reported damage has not been independently verified.
Russian authorities had not provided official details on damage from the overnight attack at the time of the report.
The Moscow refinery has been targeted previously. Following a Ukrainian drone attack on September 20, both of its primary oil-processing units caught fire, and the refinery temporarily halted crude processing, according to Reuters.
The latest attack comes amid a series of Ukrainian strikes on Russia’s oil and energy infrastructure. On October 3, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine would intensify strikes on Russian oil refineries in response to Moscow’s attacks on Ukrainian civilian and critical infrastructure.
