Explosions were reported overnight on July 16 in Russia's Saratov region, with OSINT analysts indicating that the Engels military air base was hit, ASTRA reported.
Saratov region Governor Roman Busargin said a drone attack damaged civilian infrastructure in the city of Engels but claimed there were no casualties.
Located about 14 kilometers (9 miles) east of Saratov and nearly 600 kilometers (370 miles) from the Ukrainian border, Engels-2 is one of Russia's key strategic aviation bases. It is the only permanent base for Tu-160 strategic bombers and also hosts Tu-95MS aircraft, both of which are used to launch Kh-101 and Kh-555 cruise missiles against Ukraine.
The air base has been targeted multiple times since Russia's full-scale invasion, including strikes in late 2022, March 2024, and June 2025.
