Ukraine insists on deploying a European military contingent closer to the front line in the event of a possible ceasefire. Such a presence is seen as a deterrent and an additional security guarantee for the country.
This was reported by the Agence France-Presse news agency.
Deployment near the front line
The President of Ukraine said Kyiv would like to see foreign troops positioned closer to the front line after hostilities stop.
According to him, the idea is not to replace Ukrainian forces but to ensure a joint presence of partners that would strengthen security and help prevent renewed aggression.
Purpose of a European contingent
Ukraine expects that troops from European countries could become part of broader security guarantees.
“We would like to see the contingent closer to the front line. Of course, no one wants to stand on the very first line, and of course Ukrainians would like our partners to stand with us on the front line,” the president stressed.
Such a deployment is intended to act as a deterrent, providing additional protection for the country and its citizens.
International security guarantees
Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly emphasized the need for clear international guarantees that would prevent renewed aggression after the active phase of the war ends.
The presence of foreign forces is being considered as part of a comprehensive security strategy aimed at ensuring long-term stability along the front line and protecting Ukraine’s national interests.
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian troops had managed to liberate around 300 square kilometers of territory on the southern section of the front after pushing back Russian forces.
He also stated that Ukraine is ready to discuss real compromises with the United States but will not accept decisions that threaten its independence and sovereignty. Kyiv, he stressed, has no intention of agreeing to ultimatum-style demands from Russia, which it considers the aggressor.
