Ukraine’s domestically developed FP-9 ballistic missile is expected to be ready this autumn, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an interview with Reuters published on October 3. The missile is being developed by Ukrainian defense company Fire Point.
The statement follows Ukraine’s announcement this week that its FP-7 tactical ballistic missile had been used in combat for the first time. Zelenskyy said the FP-7 has a range of around 250 kilometers.
Zelenskyy said he had recently contacted Fire Point and urged the company to accelerate work on the longer-range FP-9.
“I said to them, where is my FP-9? We need the FP-9. And the FP-9 will be ready this autumn, I’m sure,” Zelenskyy told Reuters.
Fire Point says the FP-9 is designed to strike targets at distances of up to 855 kilometers and carry a payload of up to 800 kilograms. The company lists a maximum speed of 2,300 meters per second, a flight ceiling of up to 70 kilometers and an estimated accuracy of up to 20 meters.
Reuters reported in June that Fire Point was preparing to test the FP-9 later in 2026 and described it as a ballistic missile capable of reaching Moscow.
The company has not disclosed all details of the system publicly, and the specifications published by Fire Point have not been independently verified.
The FP-9 is intended to be launched from a mobile ground-based platform. Fire Point has presented it as an operational-strategic missile designed for longer-range strikes.
