A Russian airstrike on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy killed 5 people, including a child, and injured 30 others after guided aerial bombs struck civilian areas, Sumy Regional Military Administration head Oleh Hryhorov said.
According to Hryhorov, two guided bombs hit a busy part of the city where civilians, cars, and public transport were present. One of the strikes hit near a roadway and a public transport stop.
A separate bomb struck an infrastructure facility in what Hryhorov described as another attempt by Russian forces to damage the city's critical services.
"The enemy clearly understood that civilians would be caught in the attack," Hryhorov said.
The death toll stands at 5, including one child, while 30 people have been reported injured. Three of the wounded are in serious condition, and additional victims continue to seek medical treatment.
The blasts damaged nearby apartment buildings, shattering hundreds of windows and balcony structures. Emergency crews will begin recovery operations as soon as the security situation allows, regional authorities said.
Sumy has faced repeated Russian attacks in recent weeks. On July 3, Russian forces launched a large-scale strike involving drones and guided aerial bombs that killed three people and injured 27 others, including a 13-year-old child in serious condition.
Earlier this week, Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said the security situation in Sumy region has deteriorated significantly since June, citing an increase in Russia's use of Molniya drones, fiber-optic FPV drones, attack UAVs, and guided aerial bombs.
