The Syzran oil refinery in Russia's Samara region came under attack on July 12, with analysts suggesting that one of its key crude oil processing units was likely damaged.

According to the Dnipro Osint Telegram channel, the strike appears to have hit the refinery's AVT-5 crude distillation unit, the primary processing facility that serves as the technological core of the plant.

The Syzran refinery, owned by Russia's state-controlled oil company Rosneft, has an annual refining capacity of about 8.9 million metric tons of crude oil. It produces gasoline, diesel fuel, aviation fuel, fuel oil, bitumen, and liquefied petroleum gas.

The refinery plays an important role in supplying fuel to Russia's military, including air bases and units in the Central and Southern Military Districts, while also serving the country's transport and agricultural sectors.

In 2024, the refinery processed approximately 4.3 million metric tons of crude oil, producing around 1.5 million tons of diesel fuel, 800,000 tons of gasoline, and 700,000 tons of fuel oil.

The facility was previously forced to suspend operations after a Ukrainian drone strike on May 21 damaged another primary crude processing unit. If confirmed, the latest strike would mark another setback for one of Russia's strategically important oil refineries.
