Ukrainian forces struck oil facilities in Russia’s Samara and Volgograd regions and carried out operations against military and industrial targets in five Russian regions and the Black Sea over the past 24 hours, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on October 2.
“Over the past day, oil facilities in the Samara and Volgograd regions were hit,” Zelenskyy said. He added that successful operations were also conducted in the Black Sea and in the Voronezh, Nizhny Novgorod, Volgograd, Samara and Krasnodar regions.
According to the president, the targets included airfields, industrial facilities, oil refineries, a missile and space center and an ammunition depot. Zelenskyy thanked personnel from the Security Service of Ukraine, the Main Intelligence Directorate, the Unmanned Systems Forces, the Special Operations Forces and the Foreign Intelligence Service for what he described as the accuracy and professionalism of the operations.
Ukraine’s Security Service later confirmed that its forces, together with other components of the Defense Forces, struck four important oil infrastructure facilities in the Samara and Volgograd regions. The targets included the Samara linear production and dispatch station and the Samara-1 and Samara-2 pumping stations, as well as the Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka refinery in Volgograd.
Ukrainian military intelligence also reported a strike on the Volgograd refinery, where it said a large fire broke out, and on the Samara oil-transport hub.
Russian and independent monitoring sources reported fires in both regions following overnight drone attacks. In Volgograd, a fire was visible in the area of the Lukoil refinery and the Kaustik chemical plant, while footage indicated a major fire at the Samara oil hub. The exact extent of damage was not immediately clear from publicly available material.
The strikes are part of Ukraine’s continuing long-range campaign against Russian energy and military infrastructure. Reuters has previously reported that Ukrainian attacks have increasingly targeted Russian refineries, oil-storage facilities, pumping stations and other energy infrastructure.
