US President Donald Trump has said that negotiations over Iran are focused primarily on preventing Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons, while also stating that the Strait of Hormuz will soon be reopened regardless of Iran’s position.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said he expects the issue of the strategic waterway to be resolved quickly. “I think it will happen pretty soon, and if not, we can get it done one way or another,” he said.
Addressing US personnel at Joint Base Andrews ahead of a fundraising event in Virginia, Trump emphasized that his top priority in any deal with Iran is limiting its nuclear capabilities. “No nuclear weapons. That’s 99% of the deal,” he said.
On the question of whether the agreement would include the Strait of Hormuz, Trump confirmed it would be part of the discussions, adding: “Yes, but it will resolve itself automatically.”
US Vice President JD Vance has reportedly traveled to Pakistan to lead the American delegation in talks with Iran.
Trump also claimed that Iran has violated a temporary ceasefire arrangement by interfering with oil tanker passage through the Strait and demanding payments for transit. Meanwhile, Washington is pressing European allies to present a concrete plan within days on how they would help secure the waterway once the conflict in Iran ends.
