Water tariff increase to be postponed: what Svyrydenko said

Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko said that water tariffs for households should remain unchanged. She wrote about this on Telegram.

According to her, the government has appealed to the National Energy and Utilities Regulatory Commission (NEURC) with a request to postpone the planned tariff increase.

Svyrydenko emphasized that, amid the war, Ukrainians should not face additional financial pressure. At the same time, the government acknowledges the need to find a balanced solution that takes into account the interests of both consumers and water supply and wastewater companies.

“At the same time, we must find a joint solution that balances consumers’ interests with the needs of service providers — water utilities — so that they do not incur losses or accumulate debt,” the prime minister said.

Tariff increases

It should be recalled that in 2023, the NEURC initiated an increase in cold water tariffs for households. The move was sharply criticized by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, after which the decision was cancelled.

In March this year, Ukraine’s authorities again stated plans to further raise housing and utility tariffs in a memorandum with the International Monetary Fund.

The National Bank of Ukraine expects that current tariffs for gas, heating and hot water supply will not be revised throughout 2025. An increase is possible starting in 2026.

At the same time, in May this year it was reported that the Ministry for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine proposed changes to government recommendations on water and water supply tariffs, which could lead to higher tariffs for households.

How utility tariffs are determined in Ukraine, how much they have increased since the start of the full-scale invasion, and whether there are grounds for further increases is detailed in an RBC-Ukraine report.
