Earlier, both sides had also announced a mutual exchange of prisoners.
On Thursday, April 9, the bodies (remains) of 1,000 fallen were returned to Ukraine, which the Russian side claims belong to Ukrainian servicemen, the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War reported.
Investigators from law enforcement agencies, together with expert institutions of the Interior Ministry system, will carry out all necessary examinations to identify the repatriated individuals. Only after identification will the bodies be handed over to families for proper burial.
The repatriation was carried out through joint efforts of the Coordination Headquarters, the Joint Center under the Security Service of Ukraine, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, the Ombudsman’s Office, the Secretariat for Missing Persons, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, other security and defense bodies, as well as with the assistance of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Earlier, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko noted that among the bodies returned by Russia there were also remains of Russian soldiers. In one case in February, a grenade from a handheld anti-tank launcher was found inside a body, which could have detonated during examination. Forensic experts say this was not the first such incident, but the first time an explosive device was discovered inside the body itself.
