Russian forces from the aggressor state launched a large-scale drone attack on Ukraine overnight into Friday, January 16, deploying 76 strike UAVs, including Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas, and other types of drones. About 50 of them were Shahed drones, including jet-powered variants.
This was reported by the Ukrainian Air Force.
As of 08:30, air defense forces had preliminarily neutralized 53 Russian drones. As a result of the attack, 19 UAVs struck targets at nine locations, while debris from downed drones fell at one additional site. The Ukrainian Air Force warned that the drone attack was ongoing, with several UAVs still remaining in Ukraine’s airspace.
During the night, air raid alerts were declared in Kyiv and a number of regions due to Shahed drone attacks and the threat of ballistic missiles. In the morning, explosions were heard in the capital, with reports indicating air defense activity against UAVs.
