Ukraine’s intelligence has reported that Russia is preparing for new massive attacks on the country, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Telegram.
“Today there are specific tasks for air defense and the military. Intelligence indicates that Russia is preparing for new large-scale strikes. We are openly discussing with our partners the need for missiles for air defense and the systems we urgently require,” Zelensky stated. He added that while the Ministry of Defense is working actively, supplies remain insufficient. “Please pay attention to air raid alerts and help those around you who may need support,” he urged.
Attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure
The energy sector in Ukraine remains under severe strain due to ongoing Russian attacks and extreme cold. On the night of January 16, Russian forces struck energy facilities across multiple regions, causing power outages in Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv.
As of January 15, the most critical situation was in Kyiv, where two massive missile and drone attacks on January 9 and 13 caused significant damage to the city’s power and heating systems. Sergey Kovalenko, CEO of Yasno, told RBC-Ukraine that it may take several more weeks for conditions to improve, with relief expected as temperatures rise.
On January 14, Zelensky announced a state of emergency in the energy sector in response to the attacks.
