Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has initiated an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council following Russia’s overnight strike on Ukraine using a medium–range ballistic missile known as “Oreshnik.”
Sybiha wrote on X that Russia admitted using the missile against Lviv region, calling the attack near the EU and NATO borders a serious security threat to Europe and a test for the transatlantic community. He urged a strong international response to Russia’s reckless actions.
Ukraine is informing the United States, European partners, and international organizations about the circumstances and consequences of the strike.
Sybiha dismissed Moscow’s justification of the attack as retaliation for a fake “drone attack” on Putin’s residence, saying Russia does not need real reasons for terror. He stressed that using a medium-range ballistic missile near EU and NATO borders represents a global threat and requires a global response, including stronger pressure on Russia’s oil revenues.
Ukraine will push for international actions, including an urgent UN Security Council meeting, a Ukraine–NATO Council session, and measures within the EU, Council of Europe, and OSCE.
