Ukraine’s Air Force has confirmed that Russia used the long-range “Oreshnik” missile in a strike on Lviv overnight on January 9. According to the Air Force, Russian forces carried out a massive combined attack on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure using attack drones and missiles launched from land and sea. A total of 278 aerial targets were used, of which Ukrainian defense forces successfully destroyed 244.
In Ukrainian airspace, the following were recorded:
• 242 attack drones of Shahed, “Gerbera,” and other types, including about 150 Shahed drones
• 13 Iskander-M / S-400 ballistic missiles
• 22 Kalibr cruise missiles
• 1 medium-range ballistic missile launched from the Kapustin Yar range in Russia’s Astrakhan region
The main direction of the attack was Kyiv and Kyiv region.
To repel the strikes, Ukraine deployed fighter aircraft, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare systems, drone units, and mobile fire groups. As of 09:00 on January 9, Ukrainian air defenses neutralized:
• 226 attack drones
• 8 Iskander / S-400 ballistic missiles
• 10 Kalibr cruise missiles
However, 18 missiles and 16 drones hit 19 locations, the Air Force reported.
According to Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office, the attack on Kyiv killed four people and injured 25, including a medic who died while responding to the scene. In the capital, 19 high-rise buildings, a diplomatic mission building, a kindergarten, tram depot, unfinished residential tower, vehicles, supermarket, and gas station were damaged.
There is also damage and civilian injuries reported in Kyiv region.
Around midnight, Russia launched a medium-range ballistic missile strike on Lviv region, calling it retaliation for what it claimed was a Ukrainian strike on Putin’s residence. Local authorities have not reported casualties so far.
