Russia launched a massive overnight attack on Ukraine on May 28, using a Kinzhal aeroballistic missile and 147 drones of various types, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.
The Kinzhal missile was launched from Russia’s Lipetsk region. At the same time, Russian forces deployed Shahed drones, Gerbera and Italmas UAVs, as well as several jet-powered drones.
The drones were launched from multiple directions, including Russia’s Bryansk, Kursk, Oryol, Millerovo and Primorsko-Akhtarsk regions, along with occupied Crimea, specifically from Hvardiiske and Chauda.
Ukraine’s air defense forces reported that by 8:00 a.m. they had destroyed or electronically suppressed 138 enemy drones, including Shaheds and other UAV types.
According to preliminary data, the Kinzhal missile and nine attack drones struck targets at seven locations. Debris from intercepted drones fell at six additional sites.
The latest attack follows continued Russian strikes across Ukraine. Earlier, Russian shelling in Kherson hit a children’s playground in the Korabelnyi district, killing one man and injuring a mother and her two daughters, aged three and six.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently told U.S. President Donald Trump in a letter that Russia had used two Oreshnik missiles during the massive May 24 attack, one of which struck the Kyiv region.
