Ukrainian Navy forces used the Neptune coastal missile system to carry out a precision strike on the Novoshakhtinsk Oil Refinery in Russia’s Rostov region during the night of May 31, according to the Ukrainian Navy.
The attack reportedly damaged fuel storage facilities as well as two atmospheric-vacuum distillation units used in primary oil processing. Each unit has an annual processing capacity of up to 2.5 million tons of crude oil.
The Novoshakhtinsk refinery is considered a key element of fuel infrastructure in southern Russia and is used to supply the Russian military with fuel and lubricants. Ukrainian officials said the strike reduced Russia’s logistical capabilities for supporting its forces.
The operation is part of Ukraine’s broader campaign against Russian military and energy infrastructure. Earlier today, Ukrainian forces also reported strikes on the naval base in Kronstadt, the Progress Plant in Russia’s Tambov region, and the St. Petersburg Oil Terminal.
