Russia officially announced continued missile and drone strikes on Kyiv, prompting a response from Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation under the National Security and Defense Council.
According to a statement by the head of the Center, Andriy Kovalenko, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova openly confirmed that strikes on Kyiv “have been and will continue.” She also announced that Russia’s Foreign Ministry would soon issue a special warning for foreign diplomats.
Kovalenko described the statement as a direct announcement of terror against civilians using missiles and drones.
In his view, the timing of the statement was not accidental. Before Russian leader Vladimir Putin visited China, Moscow tried to create the impression that it was considering ending the war. Now, he said, Russia is openly demonstrating the opposite.
Kovalenko also pointed to the broader context, arguing that Russia is escalating attacks on civilians while failing to ensure security on its own territory, with drones increasingly reaching Moscow.
“Terror against civilians is how Putin tries to hide his inability to guarantee Russia’s own security. Instead of ending the war, he continues escalating it,” Kovalenko said.
Earlier, during the night of May 24, Russia launched one of its largest combined attacks on Ukraine, firing 90 missiles and 600 drones, with Kyiv as the primary target. Ukrainian officials stated that the scale of the strike exceeded the interception capacity of the country’s air defense systems.
Authorities also confirmed that all recovered fragments of the “Oreshnik” ballistic missile — reportedly used against the Kyiv region for the first time — have been collected and handed over to specialists for analysis.
